Title: The role of secondary school education in increasing students’ awareness of tourism industry: a case study of Musoma District

This study analyses the role of secondary school education in increasing students’ awareness of tourism industry. In meeting this requirement the study is developed under three specific objectives which are to identify and assess students’ awareness about tourism industry, to determine teachers’ efforts towards student awareness about tourism industry, and to identify and assess the resources available to deliver tourism education in secondary schools. Data was collected through questionnaires administered to teachers and students. The interview was another data collection tool used for this study. Both qualitative and quantitative approaches were used in this study. The sample size for this study is 80 students and 20 teachers from four secondary schools in Musoma District. Although secondary school plays a big role to impact knowledge to students, the analysis reveals that tourism is given a little consideration. The existing secondary school curriculum has made tourism a non-priority course by making it a topic within geography subject with little and irrelevant resources made available. Course arrangement has not provided adequate opportunity for students to capture knowledge about tourism industry with many problems been noted which indicates inefficiency in the entire education system to support tourism. Those problems have affected the capability of teachers to teach tourism and the interest of students to learn and develop their career in tourism.  The study concludes that although tourism education is provided in secondary schools, secondary education has played a very little role to increase students’ awareness of tourism industry. Intervention is, therefore, necessary in the current secondary education system to recognize its role to increase students’ tourism awareness.
